| Crime is everyone's problem.
FICRA has established a Crime Watch Committee
to coordinate crime prevention measures on the Island. Shortages
of Sheriff's Deputies to patrol the island, and the rural nature of our
Island requires that we take proactive measures of our own to prevent
crime. Our goal is to develop
both short term and long-term solutions to this very important issue. Have you been wondering about those orange flags at
the Fox Island Bridge? This is the FICRA Crime Watch
Committee's crime event warning signal. When a crime
event has occurred on the Island, the orange flags go up. See
the crime incident list below for more
information on specific alerts. Submit an
incident using our form below.
Citizen's Patrol (CP) meets at the community Center at
7:30 PM on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Meetings are open
to those who participate in CP and are open to
the public. Call Stan Weston
at 253-549-2904. A community crime prevention
committee has recently
been formed to deal with this problem. In order for us to address this
issue and take appropriate actions, we need your help.
We are organizing Neighborhood Watch committees, and Citizen
Patrols to help monitor our neighborhoods, and report suspicious activities
to the local law enforcement agencies.
The Crime Watch Committee meets the first Wednesday of the
month, at 7:00 at the
Nichols Community Center. Stop by and lend a hand, or get some hints
on how to prevent crime here on the Island. Your input is welcome at these
important gatherings. Lets fight crime!

Watch poster.
Put one in your window, post them in your neighborhood, and in any other
conspicuous place that will deter potential thieves.

Saturday, August 21, 2010 - Suspicious White Van Spotted
- Manito Drive, Fox Island
On Saturday, August 21, 2010 around 1:30 pm a white panel van drove East slowly down Manito Drive on Fox Island. It made U-turn in front of 1163 Manito Drive. Vehicle was a mid 1980's model. Two male hispanic occupants. Did not see where it went after I left Manito and turned onto 11th. It did not exit Manito Drive.
No windows on back of van. Looked like a workers all-white truck with no signs or lettering on the side of vehicle. Boxy-shaped van, do not know make of van or license number.
A robbery occurred at a residence on Manito Drive on or around this same day.

Tuesday, August 10, 2010 - Coyotes in Tree Farm
- 13th Avenue FI -property backing to tree farm
It has been over 6 weeks since I have heard any coyotes but they were in full force last night (Tuesday August 10th). I have a Mastiff that keeps most things out of our yard but I had her inside last night and I could tell they must have been near my property line, very loud.

Friday, August 06, 2010 - Bear Scat?
- Near Fishing Pier, Fox Island, WA
Not really a crime report but forum seems to include wildlife issues.
Seeing consistent scat (feces) on beach stairs. Pieces very dark with lots of berry seeds, about 3 to 4 inches long and about 3/4 inches in diameter in piles about 3-4 inches in diam. Consistent area hit on stair landing which is roughly 1/2 way up medium bank between shore and yard and involves climbing roughly 30 steps either way. Photos researched online look most consistent for bear. Anyone seen anything similar or have any input?

Thursday, August 05, 2010 - Missing Presidential Poster
- End of 12th CT
Last week, I put an official presidential photo of Obama, in a nice
solid-wood frame, on the back outside wall of my little barn. I noticed
today that it is gone. This is not worth spending time and money to solve,
but we need to be aware that there are those who either want to vandalize
things, or to stifle our freedom of expression, if they do not agree with
us.

Tuesday, August 03, 2010 - Coyote Sightings
- 11th Lane, Fox Island
I live on 11th Lane (Near Ozette and 11th ave) and I've had 3 Coyotes in my backyard off and on the past few weeks. They are coming up to the house and even looking inside now. Paw prints on the windows. I can also hear them howling at night. I was told that the lady living behind me had fish and game on it, but I've heard nothing in weeks and the problem is getting worse. It sounds like there are puppies now.
Do you know if there is any plan to catch them? Their nest is just outside my property line. I would really like this to get taken care of.

Tuesday, August 03, 2010 - Strange vehicles
- Bella Bella Drive
On two separate occasions so far two different vehicles have been spotted (a week or two apart) parking in front of the same house on Bella Bella Drive at 11-12 at night. The first occurrence was a tan pick-up with ladders in the back where the person just parked, turned off his lights, and remained there for a couple minutes. Second occurrence was a suburban with three people in it, who exited the vehicle and walked up the street, only to return to it a while later and leave.

We hired a trapper with no luck.

Monday, August 02, 2010 - Coyote Sightings
- 1267 12th Ct., Fox Island
I have two Labs, which are inside with me most of the time. I never let them out alone and unsupervised. I leave them in a chain link kennel during the day, while I am at work, and whenever I am out at night.
This morning about 4:30am, I had both dogs on a leash walking around the yard for their morning constitutional. When we were in the front yard, on the side of the
house closest to the end of 12th Court, I heard a loud yelp-howl from the woods closer to the end of 12th Court. That would be the wooded area bounded by the dirt key at the end of 12th Court, the paved driveway winding down about 300 feet to my place, and the gravel drive leading to Bryce and Erica Pollan's horse pasture (1777 12th Court) below my place. It has been a long time since I have heard a coyote, but I know what dogs sound like, and this
wasn't it. Maybe a dog in dire distress, but it only happened once, then it was quiet.
I was concerned enough to Google the subject and end up on the FI site, which I bookmarked. I am reporting this to you, in case it is significant Also, I believe my dogs to be safe in their kennel. If you have some input on that subject (like, maybe I am wrong), I would welcome that.
In addition, I have noticed some signs of unusual activity on the property in my absence in the time I have lived there. I now know where to post that info as it happens so as to keep the community better informed.

Monday, August 02, 2010 - Coyote Sightings
- Fox Island,
Our cat was with me in the yard until I made a quick trip to the post office at about 7:30pm. When I came back he wasn't to be found outside so I figured he had been spooked by a dog visiting the neighbors. Well, he didn't come to our calls that night and hasn't been seen since. He could have had a run in with raccoons, or coyotes. I have met a neighbor on the next road whose cat disappeared on Monday night also.
I am hoping that something can be worked out to let the residents of the island know that coyotes are on the island and there have been growing reports of missing pets.
I refused to believe that there were coyotes on the island. We have lived here for 33 years haven't been worried about our pets being attacked by coyotes. We have always been aware of the possible safety problems involving raccoons, eagles and dog packs . Some people keep all of their pets indoors at all times and that seems to be the most popular suggestion. We have let our pets out since we have moved to the island (1977) and haven't had an issue until recently. Once with a dog down the road, and just this last Monday night. I have learned, after talking with some folks while searching for my cat, that several people near here have missing pets and have evidence that it was coyotes.
It is my hope that something be worked out at the meeting or at least some ideas can be suggested as a way to let all island residents know how serious these safety issues are for our animals. Perhaps we could have a wildlife person come to speak to an interest group emphasizing the importance of keeping all possible attractions away from the more dangerous wildlife. Possibly invite some folks who have protective enclosures for their pets to share with us,( there are several companies online) or have someone explain to us what needs if we want to build enclosures for our animals so they can be outdoors safely.
I realize that trapping isn't a favored method of control . It would be interesting if there are any studies on reducing the reproduction through some sort of birth control for coyotes.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH CRIME PATROL
Thank you FOX ISLANDERS for your tremendous support in helping
to prevent crime within our community. We have been working to develop two
programs, Citizens Patrol and Neighborhood Watch. The following has been
accomplished since our last report to you:
1. We are still getting excellent support from the Pierce
County Sheriff's office. Dedicated law enforcement will, continue to be provided to the Island on a regular
basis by the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.
2. Several neighborhoods are beginning to organize and
participate in neighborhood watch programs.
3. A citizens volunteer patrol has been formed and will in the
near future be providing random patrols throughout Fox Island.
4. Over $1,600.00 has been donated to FICRA to support crime
watch activities. Monies will be used to purchase neighborhood crime watch signs
and equipment for the volunteer patrols.
5. NEW WARNING SYSTEM As part of the crime prevention program,
the crime watch committee will post a warning flag on the Neighborhood Watch
bridge sign. This flag will be posted for 24/48 hours immediately after a
criminal incident on the island. Additionally, the nature of the criminal
activity will be posted on the Fox Island website. www.foxisland.net
Crime is down on the Island, but it has NOT been eliminated.
For example, several boats and vehicles were recently stolen and vandalized.
Island residents could help reduce more crime by becoming involved in
neighborhood watch programs. Those neighborhoods that have not formed
neighborhood watch programs are also in need of block leaders. Sign your roads
and streets to let everyone know that crime will not be tolerated in your area
because the neighbors are looking out for each other.
We need more volunteers for citizens against crime patrols.
The task is not difficult. Patrols will be by vehicle and volunteers will act as
the eyes and ears for law enforcement. All suspicious activity will be reported
to appropriate officials. Volunteer members will never make arrests or act in
anyway that will place themselves or others in danger.
Thank you again for your participation and support. However,
it's just the tip of the iceberg. To be successful at making Fox Island a safe
and crime free place to live, we ALL need to be committed by doing YOUR
part.
