Fox Island Nature Center - 716 9th Ave

Scout Keith Buchanan puts the finishing touches on the decking for the wetland footbridge.  Keith got his haircut since he reached the fundraising goal by August 9th.

Update on FICRA's Nature Center Project
October 21, 2005

Although it may not look like it, lots has been going on with our Nature Center over the past few months.

The Footbridge and Park Bench installation, was built by local Boy Scout volunteers from Troops 282 and 212 in Gig Harbor.

Eagle Scout candidate Keith Buchanan is in charge of the footbridge project, which created a 60' bridge over the stream which runs through the property.

Stop by and see the progress. The bridge is now completed, and all of the benches are installed.

Eagle Scout candidate John Uehlin is in charge of the Park Bench project, which resulted in 10 park benches located at the trail head area, and along the trail at various points of interest.

Each bench is made from weather-resistant materials, and will feature the names of donors who contributed $500 in the fundraiser last fall.

Stop by and see the progress. The bridge is now completed, and the benches are all installed.  The bridge project will be dedicated at a grand opening at the FICRA Fair on August 13th.

Fox Island's two Garden Clubs; Sand & Soil, and The Fox Island Garden Club have teamed up to help provide native plantings at the trailhead area, and will help coordinate the installation of bird houses and bat houses being constructed by Island volunteers with donated materials.

We Did It!  By coming together as a community, we were able to raise the necessary funds to make the down payment on our cherished wetland nature park.  But we're not done yet!     Announcing the "Buy a Brick" campaign!

In order to complete the purchase, FICRA obtained a 10-year, $15,000.00 mortgage on the Community Center.  Help us retire this debt, and Buy a Brick in the process.

The '9th Avenue Parcel' is a pristine greenbelt, containing a small stream, and many forms of wildlife.
The property is now owned by FICRA, and we are raising money during the month of October, to pay off our mortgage.

Our Purpose: For over half a century, Fox Island residents have organized to achieve the following goals, which have been adopted as FICRA’s bylaws:

To provide social and recreational activities for the residents of Fox Island, to maintain and operate the Community Center, and to provide a forum for matters pertaining to Fox Island residents.

This important first purchase could be the beginning of a more comprehensive Community Center Complex, with more space for public recreational opportunities.

The acquisition of this parcel would double the amount of land FICRA could maintain for public use.

Looking To The Future:
Preserving our heritage by investing in our community is a proud tradition for Fox Islanders; The Chapel on Echo Bay, expansion of the Fox Island Historical Museum and Nichols Community Center & playground are a few of our achievements we can all be proud of.

We can’t do this without your help. Help FICRA purchase this valuable treasure for the community by making a tax-deductible cash donation, purchasing a Memorial Brick, or set up a time payment plan.
